What is it?
Glucosamine is a naturally occurring chemical found in tthe human body and the shells of shellfish. It is often chemically derived or extracted and then formed into a supplement. Glucosamine most often comes in the form of glucosamine sulfate but other forms of glucosamine can be found in supplement form such as glucosamine hydrochloride. Most scientific research has been done on glucosamine sulfate, however, so if you are interested in purchasing a glucosamine supplement, be sure you know which version you are taking.

It has been exhaustively studied to treat forms of joint weakness, specifically in treatment of forms of arthritis and osteoperosis. Glucosamine has also been marketed to help with weight loss. There is no scientific evidence that points to glucosamine’s efficacy in weight loss, in fact it may have an adverse effect on weight loss.3 Be careful of any brands of glucosamine that market it as a weight loss aid, it is only effective for reinforcing joint strength and relieving joint pain from osteoarthritis. It is not effective as a weight loss supplement.

Where can I get it?
Glucosamine sulfate can be found online or through any nutritional supplement retailer. It is relatively expensive, as far as supplements go, costing upwards of $25 to $50 per bottle. However, glucosamine sulfate is often included together in pill form with other supplements, making it a valuable purchase as you are getting more bang for your buck. If you are suffering from debilitating joint pain from osteoarthritis, glucosamine sulfate can be an invaluable ally in relieving that pain—no matter the cost.
