What is it?
maca rootMaca root or maca, for short, is a South American medicinal herb derived from the plant of the same name. It is native to the Andes mountain regions in Peru and Bolivia and has been traditionally used to enhance energy, reduce fatigue, and improve sexual health.

What does it do?
Though scientific evidence has been inconclusive on maca’s effectiveness, maca is relatively safe to eat as has been a staple food in the Andean mountain regions of South America for centuries. Proponents of maca consider it a very strong aphrodisiac and energy supplement. It is believed, and has been used for centuries, as a cure for sexual dysfunction or even a supplement for sexual libido.

Where can I get it?
Maca supplements can be found easily online or in an herbal supplement retailer. It is also often paired with other herbal medicines that claim to enhance sexual energy. Outside of supplements, however, maca can be difficult to find. Demand is steadily growing but you won’t find maca in your local grocery market. The most accessible and most prominent version of maca is probably maca flour. Using maca flour instead of other forms of flour can also be beneficial to one’s diet. Using maca flour can be a good substitute for less healthy bread or grain alternatives as maca is a good source of protein, calcium, and phosphorous.
