Health Benefits of Selenium

What is it?
Selenium is a mineral that can be found in trace amounts naturally in soil and the food you eat. Different foods have different amounts of selenium, but (very) generally, poultry, fish and grain products are good sources of selenium. Selenium is not recommended as a weight-loss supplement  however selenium levels in one’s body can play a vital role in maintaining a healthy weight, therefore it is important to consult with the proper physicians before taking selenium supplements. If you feel that your diet is selenium-deficient, selenium supplements can help correct or maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Selenium and Health

How does it work? What can it be used for?
Selenium and selenium supplements have powerful antioxidant properties, protecting cells from cell damage.  Studies show that low selenium levels are linked with higher risk of cancer death. There is some evidence that selenium can help provide the body with protection from prostate cancer, as well as protection during various stages of various other cancers.
Selenium also plays a significant role in healthy thyroid function, which is important when it comes to regulating the body’s weight. It may be more difficult for selenium-deficient diets to lose weight. Note, however, that most Americans get the recommended daily allowance of selenium (55 micrograms) by eating regularly.

Proper Usage / Side Effects / Warnings
Selenium tablets should only be used after consulting your doctor to determine if it can be helpful to supplement an otherwise selenium-deficient diet. Furthermore, selenium should only be taken in very small doses. The recommended daily allowance of selenium is 55 micrograms per day, and the upper limit of selenium intake is 400 micrograms per day. Selenium can be toxic in too large amounts, so extra precaution must be taken in terms of selenium intake. Finally, large doses of selenium has been linked to an increase risk of skin cancer and greater risk of diabetes.

Where can I get it?
Selenium can be found in supplement form at any major supplement retailer or online. Selenium tablets are very affordable ranging from 2-10 dollars depending on volume, quality, and dosage per tablet.
