How Many Calories are in a Banana?
The Banana has been a main component in the human diet since the beginning of time.  Currently, bananas are grown all over the world in tropical conditions. Bananas are commonly thought of as the third most popular fruit behind the apple and orange. It is an extremely versatile fruit.  Athletes eat bananas before and during competition.  A person in a rush to get to work might grab a banana to eat in the car for breakfast. And you might even treat yourself to a ‘banana split’ (not recommended for fat loss). But exactly how healthy are they and how many calories are in a banana?

Nutrition Facts

Keep in mind that these figures are based on 1 medium sized banana of 7”-8”.  Fruits come in all shapes and sizes so the exact number of calories will depend on the size of the banana. For example, an extra small banana of less than 6” will only have about 70 calories.

An extra large banana that is longer than 9” can have up to 140 calories.  Also, these figures are based on a raw banana so cooking or frying the banana could increase the number of calories.

The Good Stuff

  • Low calories–It’s amazing that such a low calorie food can be so filling and nutritious
  • High in fiber, vitamin C and manganese–all necessary for optimal metabolic functioning
  • Good source of potassium which is a very important electrolyte that helps kidney and muscular function
  • Bananas are slowly digested keeping you feeling full for longer than many other fruits.
  • You can easily carry them around with you so you can stop and eat that banana instead of going to the pretzel stand

The Bad Stuff

  • As with most fruit, bananas are very low on protein
  • High in carbohydrates so you might want to skip it if you’re on a very strict low-carb diet

Is it Ripe?
When you’re at the grocery store, choose bananas that are a little less ripe.  If you plan to eat your bananas very soon, choose some of the more ripe ones at the store.  You can tell if a banana is ripe by the color.  If it is yellow, then it is ripe.  Also a ripe banana is softer than a green banana but it should not be too soft.

You can also speed up and slow down the ripening process. To slow it down, simply put the banana in the freezer or refrigerator. To speed it up, put the bananas in a paper bag with a separate brown (very ripe) banana.

Should I eat it?
Yes, I would recommend you eat at least one banana per day.  Bananas contain almost all the vitamins your body needs.  These vitamins are slowly digested keeping you feeling full and giving you energy for hours. If your going to be working out or playing sports, eating a banana about 1 hour before will keep you energized and also keep your electrolytes up. Bananas are a healthy snack that you don’t need to feel guilty about eating.  However, eating too much of anything is not good.  If you are trying to lose weight, I would eat 2 bananas per day (at most) because they do contain some carbs.
