We’ve always been told “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Well it’s not just a catchy saying, there’s truth behind it. The apple is one of the most commonly cultivated tree fruits. Apples have been around for thousands of years.

They come in all shades of reds, greens, and yellows. The color variety is great because it is recommended to have a multitude of colors in one’s diet. Apples can be a great afternoon snack or even a side at a meal. Apples are so beneficial, they are even offered as a side at fast food restaurants (although fast food is not recommended).

Remember these figures are based on 1 medium sized apple 3” diameter raw. However, there are many different kinds of apples which will effect the number of calories. For example, a Gala apple has 80 calories while there can 109 calories or more in a Fuji apple. Also, make sure to eat the skin of the apple because it has been found to have cancer fighting properties as well as prevent Heart Diseases. Apples area good source for Vitamin C and are high in dietary fiber.

Is it Ripe?
An apple is ripe when the starch inside of it turns into sugar.  Of course, this occurs after the apple is picked from the tree.  There are two ways you can tell if an apple is ripe. The first is by touch.  If the apple is very firm and has no ‘give’ then the apple is not yet ripe.  A ripe apple should soften up a little bit but not be too soft.  Don’t worry, if your apples get too soft, they will be even sweeter and you can make a healthy dessert.  The second way to tell if an apple is ripe is by taste.  Because apples ripen as their starch turns to sugar, a ripe apple will be somewhat bittersweet.  On the other hand, an apple that has not yet ripened will be almost too sour to enjoy.

Should I Eat Apples?
Apples are a great snack with a ton of benefits. They have been found to lower the risk of certain cancers and various diseases. Apples are rich in Vitamin C and fiber which will improve digestion. They are easy to grab on the go, but should not be consumed more than once or twice a day due to their high sugar levels. Beware that apple juice and sauce often have extra sugar added during production. They do not have the same benefits of a raw apple. Apples are a low calories snack that leave you feeling refreshed. Remember, a fresh apple is not the same as a candy apple or apple pie.
