Oatmeal is a great tasting start to your day.  Think of a steaming hot bowl of oatmeal on a cold winter morning..sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?  It’s not only a great food choice when you’re trying to lose weight, but it’s great for gaining lean muscle mass as well.

Oatmeal is also a whole grain so it will keep you feeling full and reduce hunger cravings for hours after eating it.  You can put a variety of toppings on oatmeal.  A little maple syrup can add some great flavor.  Fresh fruit can also turn a plain bowl of oatmeal into a delicious healthy dessert.

Before we get to the calories, let’s look at some of the other nutrients found in oatmeal.  First, what’s NOT there:  Oatmeal is very low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium.  These are all great characteristics of a healthy food.  Also, it has a whopping 11 grams of protein (this is good) and 8 grams of dietary fiber.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, ‘there are over 300 calories in just 1 cup of oatmeal!’  That is a lot of calories. But before we judge oatmeal too harshly, let’s look at where these calories are coming from.  226 of these calories are coming from carbohydrates, with only 44 coming from fat and 36 coming from protein respectively.  However, don’t be too scared by this high calorie count as oatmeal is still a great weight loss food.


The Good Stuff

  • Oatmeal is extremely inexpensive.  If you are looking to lose weight, but still stay on your budget, a package of $5 oats can last you over 20 meals.
  • It’s probably already in your home.  Oatmeal is one of the most commonly eaten foods.
  • Studies show it may lower cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease.
  • It has also been shown to reduce blood pressure
  • The whole grains in oatmeal will take you longer to digest keeping you feeling full for longer until your next meal

The Bad Stuff

  • Oatmeal has a lot of calories so eat in moderation
  • Has a lot of carbs so make sure to stay active
  • Some of the flavored varieties contain added sugar and chemicals so try to stay with plain oatmeal

Should I Eat Oatmeal to Lose Weight?
Yes, oatmeal is a great food to eat in order to lose weight.  A small bowl of oatmeal at breakfast can keep you feeling full for hours so you won’t snack all morning.  However, oatmeal does contain a high amount of calories so don’t eat too much.  About 1 serving per day will be safe to consume and still lose weight.  Also, be very careful about what you put on top of your oatmeal as this will add to the calorie count as well.  Try fresh fruit or cinnamon as an alternative to sugar or syrup.
