Eating Well on the RoadIf you’re someone who’s often travelling because of work or play, it’s important that you take the time to learn how to eat right while on the road.  Eating away from home can definitely be a challenge but with the right approach and mindset, you can still have success at sticking with a healthy diet plan and getting the body that you’re after.

Pre-Plan As Much As Possible
The very first thing that you should do is try and pre-plan your meals as best as possible. If you know you have a dinner date or function coming up where you may be taking in a few more calories than you should or have less control over the foods that are offered, aim to reduce back slightly on the other meals to accommodate.

Remember that as long as you meet your total daily requirements for the entire day, one meal that’s higher in calories won’t matter that much provided the others are lower.

Pack Ready-To-Go-Snacks
The second thing that you should consider is packing as many ready to go snacks as you can.  These can really be life-savers when driving or in between meals when you need a bite to eat and don’t have anything else healthy available.

Great ready-to-go snacks include whey protein powder with dry oats, pop top cans of tuna, low sodium beef jerky, whole wheat crackers with some natural peanut butter, or some bran based cereal.

These options don’t require refrigeration so will keep well in your back or purse.

Choose Wisely At The Restaurant
When you are going to find yourself dining out in a restaurant, it’s imperative that you learn how to read the menu carefully. Salads tend to be a relatively safe option since they are raw foods so you know there hasn’t been butter or high calorie sauces added in the cooking process.

When ordering your salad though, make sure to ask for the dressing on the side and remove any of the higher calorie add-ins such as croutons, ramen noodles, high fat cheeses, or candied nuts.  These will just add too many extra calories that you don’t need.

If you prefer a warm entrée, then grilled chicken breast with steamed vegetables will always be your best bet. Even there though, be sure to request the steamed vegetables come without butter otherwise the chef will likely add it.

Get Active
Finally, the last tip is to also make sure that you stay as active as possible.  Even walking around more throughout the day can help you burn off a couple hundred more calories than normal and this can prevent weight gain if you do overeat slightly with your food choices.

While you may not be able to get in your usual full scale workout session, if you’re moving around more over the course of the 24 hours, you definitely can make up for it.
