Sodium Intake And Its Effects On Weight Loss


One questionable element of your diet that you may start to wonder about is sodium.  You’re already taking steps to cut out sugar, to cut out preservatives, and to cut out saturated fat. Is sodium yet another thing that you have to add to this list?

There are many low-sodium products now popping up on your supermarket shelves so you may be thinking that perhaps you should be slashing this mineral from your diet as much as possible.

But, before you do, there are a few important things to keep in mind.

Why You Need Sodium

The very first thing to note is that cutting out all sodium from your diet would be a very, very bad move.  Sodium, in its more natural forms (not added salt from the table) is actually required by the body for a number of processes and is going to ensure that your electrolyte balance stays healthy.

If you don’t take in enough sodium, you may experience very low blood pressure, a general feeling of being very weak and tired, as well as severe light-headedness and feeling dizzy each and every time you get up from a seated position.


Having enough sodium in your diet is going to be important for maintaining strong muscle contractions so that you can work as hard as possible while in the gym.

The Case Of Food Choices

What you must realize however is that rather than cutting out all the sodium in your diet, focus on cutting out foods that have added sodium to them.

For instance, if you’re eating canned foods, those will be high in sodium, but should you really be eating canned foods in the first place?

If you are making smart dietary choices, such as including plenty of lean proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, and whole grains, your diet will naturally be lower in sodium because these foods just don’t pack in nearly the same degree of sodium as man-made foods do.

So, rather than putting the focus on cutting out sodium, put the focus on smart food choices. If you do that, you’ll naturally see better weight loss and help keep your sodium in the healthy range.

The Bloat Factor That Must Be Considered

Another very important thing to keep in mind especially with regards to how sodium relates to weight loss is the fact that sodium will cause the body to retain extra water.

So, if you’ve ever woken up after eating a plate of nachos with salsa the night before or going out for Chinese food, you’re likely noticing that you look very bloated and like you gained weight.

But, this isn’t true fat gain, it’s just water retention.  So those who are on a diet, especially those who are aiming to reduce sodium need to keep this in mind.

If all of a sudden you do eat a high sodium food, this will really shock your body and as a result, cause it to retain a great deal of extra water.

This water will be lost within a day or two though as you move back to your normal diet fare.  It’s nothing to get concerned over, however often it throws dieters into a panic.

So there you have some of the important points to remember about sodium and weight loss.  You can have some natural forms of sodium in a healthy weight loss diet and if you are making smart food choices, this factor will take care of itself.

Trying to eliminate all sodium entirely would not be a smart plan, but trying to eliminate foods you shouldn’t be eating in the first place would be.
