The Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

benefits of intermittent fastingWhat is Intermittent Fasting?

Over the last few decades, the conventional nutritional wisdom has advised those interested in losing weight to eat 4-6 small, but nutritious meals each day.  I’m sure you’ve also been told to ‘never skip breakfast’ or not eat any large meals.  Many people have lost weight according to these principles but would they be healthier and might they have lost more weight by doing it a different way? The answer is likely ‘yes.’

Welcome to the world of intermittent fasting.  The principles of intermittent fasting are very simple.  You just need to incorporate periods of fasting (not eating) in to your lifestyle. This does not mean starving yourself and you can still drink water during times of fast.  In fact, I highly recommend drinking a lot of water during your fast as you will not feel as hungry and water helps you to begin to rid your body of any harmful toxins.

There are several ways to incorporate intermittent fasting into your life, depending on how frequently you wish to fast.  You can fast every other day, once a week, or even once a month.  There are those people that even fast just once per year (sometimes for religious reasons).  Some very dedicated individuals have been able to fast every day, with only a few hour of eating each day.  But, regardless of how often you fast, you are doing your body a huge favor.

As with any diet or nutrition philosophy, there are many viewpoints on the exact benefits of intermittent fasting.  You just need to take everything you read ‘with a grain of salt’ and decide what is best for you and your lifestyle.  However, those who are in favor of intermittent fasting as both a lifestyle and weight-loss method will tell you that the benefits include: increased insulin resistance, better immune function (meaning you will be less likely to get sick), decrease in rheumatoid arthritis and simple arthritis symptoms, and even help women cope with the negative symptoms of menopause.  Oh, did I forget to mention weight loss.  You will lose weight and burn fat by utilizing the concepts of intermittent fasting correctly.

Like I mentioned earlier, there are many ways to go about intermittent fasting and they are all effective.  I personally believe the easiest (and most effective) way to begin intermittent fasting is the 20/4 method.  This means you will fast for twenty hours out of the day and eat for the other four hours of the day.  I recommend the four hours that you will be eating to be sometime in the afternoon.  For example, you would only eat from 2:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. daily and fast for the remainder of the day.

Should you incorporate intermittent fasting into your lifestyle to lose weight?

I highly recommend incorporating intermittent fasting into your life if you are looking to lose weight and burn fat.  However, you shouldn’t go it alone or without all the facts.  If you are interested in intermittent fasting and are serious about losing weight, I recommend the Eat Stop Eat program created by Brad Pilon.  You can learn more about it here.
